Shawano, WI (Sept. 5, 2009) - The action was fast and furious during the final night of racing at Shawano Speedway Saturday night. When the dust settled, Terry Anvelink won his second WISSOTA Late Model feature, while A.J. Diemel won his first WISSOTA Late Model track championship.
Jerry Wilinski won his third straight IMCA Modified feature, with Jared Siefert winning his third straight IMCA Modified championship.
Dan Michonski won his first IMCA Stock Car feature of the year, with Rod Snellenberger winning his third straight IMCA Stock Car championship and fourth overall.
Photos By HooferDiemel also won his 10th Fastrak Late Model feature of the year, but it was Justin Hirt taking home the track championship.
In the IMCA Sport Mod division Clint Forstner came up short in the championship battle, but did win his third feature of the year. Tim Jorgenson won his third straight IMCA Sport Mod championship.
Ryan Huettl paced the WISSOTA Late Model field with Terry Anvelink, Mark Mitchell, Tom Naeyaert and Chris Oertel following. It stayed that way until A.J. Diemel joined the top five on lap seven. Anvelink also began applying pressure on Huettl for the lead but couldn’t make the pass. With eight laps remaining the caution flag waved for the only time in the race.
Photos By HooferHuettl continued to lead on the restart with Anvelink, Diemel, Naeyaert and Mitchell all in pursuit. Anvelink pulled alongside Huettl a couple laps later but again could not make the pass. Anvelink looked for an opening under Huettl on the next lap entering turn one, while Diemel flew to the high side. Huettl remained in the lead, but pushed up the track in turn two on the next lap allowing Anvelink to take the lead. Diemel and Naeyaert also worked their way by Huettl before the race concluded, but it was Anvelink taking the win.
Jerry Wilinski took the lead on a lap two restart in the IMCA Modified feature, only to have the race slowed again on lap three. Wilinski continued to lead over Marcus Yarie, Eddie Muenster, John Berna and Jerry Muenster on the restart. Michael Bailey joined the top five on the next lap. That’s the way it stayed until a caution with seven laps remaining.
With Wilinski still in the lead on the restart, Bailey grabbed the fourth spot from Berna. There was no denying Wilinski, though, as he motored to the win over Eddie Muenster, Yarie, Bailey and Berna.
The IMCA Stock Car feature got off to a rough start with three cautions in the first two laps. When the race was restarted for the final time Dan Michonski took the lead over Nate Michonski, Greg Gretz, Rod Snellenberger and Travis Van Straten. Gretz took over the second spot on the next lap with Snellenberger following on the next lap.
Gretz caught Dan Michonski midway through the race and tried several times to make the pass for the lead but Michonski fended him off every time. Gretz eventually relinquished the second spot to Snellenberger with five laps remaining. Snellenberger pressured Michonski over the final laps, but Michonski was up to the challenge and took the win. He was followed by Snellenberger, Gretz, Larry Karcz Jr., and Jon Wolfe.
M.J. McBride grabbed the top spot over Dan Wanta, Jeff Curtin, Scott Lewis and A.J. Diemel in the Fastrak Late Model feature. After a lap two restart, McBride continued to lead only to give the lead up to Curtin on the next lap. Diemel wasted no time working his way through the top five and roared into the lead on lap four. A caution on lap six once again slowed the action.
Diemel continued to lead on the restart with Curtin, Justin Hirt, McBride and Lewis following. Curtin and Hirt were involved in a battle for second over the next several laps with Curtin maintaining the position. But it was Diemel at the end, as he cruised to his fifth straight win.
In the IMCA Sport Mod feature Joey Taycher led the first seven laps with Kevin Bethke, Jason Jach, Josh Moesch and Cheyenne Cameron following. The caution flag flew at this time. Jach took the lead on the restart, but there were several more cautions over the next few laps slowing the pace.
Point leader Tim Jorgenson had to start the race near the back after being involved in a wreck in his heat race. While Jorgenson was racing through the field, Clint Forstner, who was five points out of the lead entering the race, was making his way to the front. Forstner darted into the lead with four laps remaining. With two laps remaining Jorgenson joined the top five trying to preserve the championship. When the checkered flag waved for the final race of the season, it was Forstner taking the win over Jach, Matt Oreskovich, Jorgenson and Tracy Wassenberg. Jorgenson won the championship by two points.
